Clarity
One of the keys to unlocking change in ourselves is to become aware of how we view our world and the ways we respond to it. This new awareness can be leveraged in multiple ways to achieve the change we seek. It's not always easy to identify the unhelpful habits we employ, or the assumptions we hold, or how we assume life must be. Sometimes we're simply lacking needed resources. These things live under the radar. However, once we locate these seeds of change within us, we've suddenly planted the life we seek.
Action
There are many types of coaches and coaching styles, however the foundation it all rests on is an insight-action-learning model of personal change.
We can't change what we aren't aware of--the insight piece. It's hard to change how we do something if we don't try out new methods or processes--action. Finally, lasting change comes from shifts in our understanding about who we see ourselves to be and what we realize is possible for our lives--the learning piece.
The action a coach supports the client to take is experimental in nature. It's refined and improved upon to where it becomes easier and integrated. Finally, this new way becomes our default.
Change
Coaching has long been considered an effective way to create change. The partnership aspect of it is fundamental to its effectiveness. In a coaching relationship there exists a supportive, judgement-free space for the client's discovery process and practical effort toward a goal.
A coach is a trusted sounding board and a curious listener, whose job it is to spur insight in the client for change, and to act as an accountability partner for new action.
